In today's tech-savvy world, leveraging AI to optimize a resumé might seem like an easy way to save time and add keywords. After all, AI tools offer advantages like language expertise, automated feedback, and keyword infusion. However, before entrusting the premiere piece in your job search toolbox to a known digital hallucinator, consider some of the limitations and put best practices into place.

Limitations of AI

Over-reliance on AI:

  • ·        AI tools like ChatGPT might produce generic results, lacking the specificity needed for tailored resumés, especially when given large job descriptions.

  • ·        They may not grasp the nuances of different industries, positions, or companies.

Limited creativity:

·        AI suggestions may lack innovation, as they're based on existing data patterns, and the AI will only respond to detailed prompts.

·        Unconventional formats or approaches that could make your resumé stand out may be overlooked.

Inaccuracies or mistakes:

  • ·        AI models, while efficient, aren't infallible and can occasionally provide inaccurate recommendations. Some models have completely fabricated facts and details in what has become known as AI hallucinations.

  • ·        Critical review and validation are necessary to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of AI-generated content. Never allow AI-generated content to be sent to any potential employer without editing first.

Tips and Best Practices for AI Use

Content refinement:

  • ·        Provide your existing resumé content to the platform for refinement.

  • ·        Ask for suggestions to enhance wording, bullet points, and overall clarity.

  • Tailoring for specific roles:

  • ·        Share job descriptions or industry-related keywords with the platform.

  • ·        Seek guidance on how to tailor your resumé to match specific roles or industries.

Reviewing and proofreading:

  • ·        After incorporating suggestions, ask for a review to catch remaining errors.

  • ·        Use the platform as an extra pair of eyes to identify grammatical mistakes, typos, or formatting issues.

Remember, while AI tools can be valuable resources for resumé optimization, they should supplement rather than replace human judgment, industry knowledge, and careful review. Use AI suggestions as a starting point, edit it to your own liking, and if you still feel it needs something else, seek out an expert. Someone like me, who has years of writing and human resources experience, and knows what hiring managers want to see on your resumé.
